Beverage Reviews

Sometimes you just want to taste something different. Is there more to life than just Coke and Pepsi?

Just for fun, Steve and Amy find and taste an assortment of soft drinks, sodas, and pop -- resulting in numerous beverage reviews. Who knows, you may find something you like!

Pepsi Holiday Spice

Big Bamboo Irish Moss Jamaican Peanut Drink
A peanut drink? This bevearge review tackles the unique offerings of Big Bamboo Irish Moss Jamaican Peanut Drink. The overall opinion? Much like a peanut butter milkshake, complete with a very thick texture and overly peanuty taste. Not too bad!

Diet Pepsi Max
Perhaps PepsiCo's answer to both Coca-Cola Zero and Diet Coke Plus, this Diet Pepsi spinoff features a new batch of artificial sweeteners, more caffeine, and some ginseng for good measure. The best part of Diet Pepsi Max? The very excellent packaging!

Coca-Cola Vanilla Zero
Forget Diet Vanilla Coke. The Zero line is all the rage with this 2nd flavor extension, Coca-Cola Vanilla Zero. Our soft drink review notes that the vanilla flavoring isn't very strong, which unfortunately allows the aftertaste to shine through.

Fanta Grapefruit
Fanta Grapefruit, or Fanta Toronja as the Spanish side of the label proclaims, is a light citrus beverage. Not as strong as Fanta Citrus or Canfield's 50/50, but decent. This beverage review takes a look at this cloudy-colored drink.

Coca-Cola Vanilla
Back from the dead, Vanilla Coke is rechristened as Coca-Cola Vanilla in this soda review. Aside from stupid Coke method of naming, it's the same Vanilla Coke you fell in love with. It's better than Coca-Cola Black Cherry Vanilla!

Jones Soda Cream Soda (Pure Cane Soda Version)
This soft drink review takes a look at the revised Jones Soda line, no longer sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. Jones Soda Cream Soda is instead sweetened with "inverted cane sugar". What is inverted cane sugar? Sweet, but good.

Sierra Mist Lemon Squeeze
Amazing lemon flavor can be found in the limited-time Sierra Mist Lemon Squeeze. We liked it so much more than the flagship Sierra Mist. This soft drink review notes that the smooth flavor is something to be sampled before it's gone forever!

Boylan Bottleworks Ginger Ale
Boylan continues their cane sugar flavors with Boylan Bottleworks Ginger Ale. Just like Boylan Bottleworks Black Cherry, our soda review found this to be an exceptional drink. Great compliment to a meal or if you drink it by itself.

Hansen's Natural Green Tea Soda Pomegranate
Much better in taste when compared to Hansen's Natural Green Tea Soda Tangerine, Hansen's Natural Green Tea Soda Pomegranate had a distinctly cherry flavor. Our beverage review noted that the pomegranate flavor was crisp, light, and tasty!

Pepsi Summer Mix
Is this the return of Pepsi Blue? Pepsi Summer Mix features "a mix of tropical fruit flavors" that are very, very sweet. If this wasn't cola-colored, you would swear that it would be shaded blue. Per our soda review, beware of instant diabetes!

Diet Coke Plus
Underneath the marketing hype of "Diet Coke with vitamins," this beverage review reveals that Diet Coke Plus is actually an entirely different formulation. The use of sweeteners similar to Coke Zero makes it better than original Diet Coke.

Kosher for Passover Caffeine Free Pepsi
Just like Kosher for Passover Coke, Kosher for Passover Caffeine Free Pepsi is awesome. This beverage review highlights the evil taste of high fructose corn syrup and the pleasures of real sugar sweetening!

Hansen's Natural Green Tea Soda Tangerine
Loaded with EGCG, this soda review of Hansen's Natural Green Tea Soda Tangerine denotes the this drink tastes a lot like "Sprite with a tea aftertaste." It's sweetened with glucose-fructose syrup, whatever the heck that is supposed to be.

Archer Farms Mangosteen Herbal Red Tea
Archer Farms Mangosteen Herbal Red Tea is a Target store brand of beverage. It had sort of a citrus flare, but was basically just smelling like tea. Possessed a nice, mellow taste that was incredibly smooth.

Monster Energy
This energy drink review highlights Monster Energy, the flagship brand in the Monster family. The color of this beverage was similar to apple juice with a somewhat red tint. As for the taste, think citrus + medicine.

Boylan Bottleworks Black Cherry
Awesome drink sweetened with natural cane sugar. This beverage review highlights a soda done right. A little sweet, good body, rich and bold. Boylan Bottleworks Black Cherry is an excellent gourmet soft drink.

Diet Pepsi Jazz Caramel Cream
This diet soda review highlights the third variation in the Diet Pepsi Jazz lineup, Diet Pepsi Jazz Caramel Cream. The drink doesn't possess a strong caramel flavor, but it is by far the best this series has to offer.

Vault Red Blitz
Not as acidic and biting as Mountain Dew Code Red, Vault Red Blitz is mellow and shares similar properties with original Vault. Unfortunately, the berry flavor is substantially weak and not very noticeable during our beverage review.

Coca-Cola Cherry Zero
With a confusing name more complicated than Disneyland Resort Paris, Coca-Cola Cherry Zero isn't really Diet Cherry Coke. Our soft drink review notes the weak cherry flavor and expected diet aftertaste.

Coca-Cola Zero (w/black packaging)
Once again taking a look at Coca-Cola Zero, our soda review highlights the change in packaging from white to black labels. Coke's diet drink with aspartame and acesulfame potassium is doing pretty well.

Coca-Cola Cherry
It's still Cherry Coke, so this isn't a beverage review. However, with a new name -- Coca-Cola Cherry -- and a new package design that looks somewhat girly, Coke breaths new life into an old favorite.

Jones Soda Holiday Collection Overview
For Holiday 2006, Jones Soda released 13 specialty flavors of drinks. Our beverage reviews begin with breaking down the Holiday Pack, Dessert Pack, and the new 4-Packs of unique tastes.

Jones Sweet Potato Soda
Holiday Pack soda review: "You are welcomed by a very 'creamy bitterness' in the aftertaste, somewhat prompting a gag reflex, but not quite. Tastes like 'cold fabric softener'."

Jones Cherry Pie Soda
Dessert Pack soda review: "Carbonated grenadine. That pretty much sums up the Cherry Pie Soda tastes. The flavor is very syrupy, almost too much. Much like a melted cherry popsicle."

Jones Key Lime Pie Soda
Dessert Pack soda review: "Do you remember the drink Green River? Probably not. Tastes like that. Fresh, light, and slightly sour. Think of Sprite, but heavy on the lime rather than lemon."

Jones Sugar Plum Soda
4-Pack soda review: "Jones Sugar Plum Soda resembled watered-down grape pop with some sort of obscure aftertaste. I can't quite place it. It's not gag-inducing, but it's not very pleasant either."

Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash
The drink starts out well, with a cherry flavor, with the aftertaste sharing a more pronounced cranberry / lemon-lime combination. The bevearge review proclaims "I think I liked this drink better than normal Sierra Mist, which is saying a lot."

Mountain Dew MDX 20 oz.
Same taste as previous Mountain Dew MDX packaging. "I don't think MDX has a chance. It has had virtually no marketing behind it aside from the launch and has very little buzz," predicts the beverage review.

Route Beer 66
This specialty root beer was pretty bland. Noted the soda review, "beyond the nifty bottle and bad pun on the Route 66 name, this root beer isn't much to write home about... or in this case, drive home about."

Jones Soda Halloween Collection 2006

Jones Halloween Collection (2006 Overview)
Jones Soda releases both cans and bottles of unique Halloween flavors for 2006. As thie beverage review overview will show, picking out what's good and bad is as simple as deciding if you like glass or not.

Jones Berried Alive Soda (2006)
"Overall, it tasted like candy," summarizes this soda review. "Sour candy, with a sweet aftertaste. It tasted pretty good and we'd drink it again without question."

Jones Spider Cider Soda (2006)
"The smell was somewhat apple juice-y, but not authentically so. The taste, however, was not authentic at all." So reads the beverage review of Jones Spider Cider Soda. "It was rather disgusting."

Jones Gruesome Grape Soda (2006)
This 8 oz. limited edition flavor can from Target had an extremely sweet, much stronger taste than Fanta Grape. "Very candy-like in sweetness and strength," notes this soft drink review.

Jones Candy Corn Soda (2006)
"Dirty urine." That's our official soda review description. "This was utterly disgusting. Maybe not on the level as some of the Jones Holiday Pack flavors, but not very good at all."

Jones Lemon Drop Dead Soda (2006)
Lemon Drop Dead Soda was pretty good. Not outstanding, but not bad either. "We anticipated more of a lemon flavor; it was weaker when we actually drank it," noted the beverage review.

Jones Creepy Cranberry Soda (2006)
Nothing like 2005's Jones Cranberry Soda from the Holiday Pack, this soft drink review of Creepy Cranberry Soda noted "this was a rather tame drink. Perhaps too tame." It lacked tartness.

Jones Monster Mojito Soda (2006)
"Monster Mojito was perhaps the most unique in flavor," among the other Jones Halloween flavors given beverage reviews. "It didn't really taste like a Halloween item, but it also didn't taste like a traditional pop."

Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper
Not really a soft drink review, but more of a marketing update, we talk about how the packaging of Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper has been updated to reflect the new look found in the rest of the line.

Tropicana Twister Soda Orange
What's wrong with a beverage review where you note that "the packaging has somewhat of a goofy logo, though I must admit that I really liked the contrasting orange/blue color scheme"? Yeah, the drink is an afterthought.

Diet Pepsi Jazz Strawberries & Cream
This installment in Pepsi's long-winded Jazz sub-branded diet line showcases a very cola-like flavor. However, the soda review reveals that it probably won't be on the market 2 years from now.

Rosa's Horchata (Original Flavor)
Real horchata is made of rice milk and flavored with cinnamon and/or vanilla. In this beverage review of the original flavor of Rosa's Horchata, we discover that you can replicate the real thing pretty closely.

Diet Pepsi Jazz Black Cherry French Vanilla
Pepsi launched 2 new flavored diet drinks under a new sub-brand called "Jazz", known as a "New Line Of Indulgent Zero-Calorie Colas." As this soft drink review reports, execution on the flavor kills this drink.

Dr. Pepper
Of course we're not going to do a beverage review of Dr. Pepper. C'mon, this drink rocks. It now has a new logo design, first introduced on Dr. Pepper Berries & Cream and later Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper.

Tropicana Twister Soda Citrus
Tropicana Twister Soda is a caffeine-free fruit-flavored spinoff brand by Pepsi launched back in 2005. In this soda review, we note that "the taste was nothing exceptional. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't something that was unique."

Sprite Zero
And so the soft drink review history of Sprite Zero reads: "2 years, 3 names. That's the story behind Sprite Zero. 'Hi, we're Coke... we are clueless marketing people!'" Personally, I can't stand the taste.

Mike's Hard Crisp Apple
It's an alcoholic beverage review on SteveandAmySly.com! The taste of Mike's Hard Crisp Apple is definitely apple, probably more of the Golden Delicious variety rather than a Gala... but with a small kick.

Jones Blue Bubble Gum Soda
"There was a lot of similarity to cream soda," notes our beverage review of Jones Blue Bubble Gum Soda. "The aftertaste reminded us of the white powdery residue you typically find when you first open a stick of gum."

7Up
Why does one do a soda review on a classic like 7Up? Well, you have to take a look when it's reformulated with more "natural ingredients." However, the problem wasn't the formula. Now it's worse.

Pepsi Vanilla
Pepsi Vanilla was launched in 2003 as a direct response to Vanilla Coke, which came out a year earlier. Our soft drink review highlights that "it did taste very smooth going down."

Dr. Pepper Berries & Cream
"It's basically Dr. Pepper with a hint of vanilla... Something like creme soda," reads this beverage review of Dr. Pepper's line extension into the realm of purple-colored packaging.

Coca-Cola BlaK
Soda review on how Coke never got the memo about coffee soft drinks that failed in the mid 1990s. They say Coca-Cola Bl?K is a "carbonated fusion beverage," which was just an odd blend of flavors in your mouth. Didn't hate it. Didn't like it.

Pepsi Twist
How can you do a soft drink review on a beverage that was launched nationwide in late 2001/early 2002 but you pretty much can't find today? I liked it a lot... though I thought it could have used a little more lemon flavor.

Kosher for Passover Coke
It's time for a beverage review of Coke's special version for Passover. Learn about HFCS, sucrose, and how we were blown away by the drastic difference between Kosher for Passover Coke and the regular drivel that's on the shelves the rest of the year.

Fanta Lemonic
Let's review a beverage from Poland... Fanta Lemonic. While you'd expect this drink to taste somewhat like lemonade, it didn't. Rather, it had a very pleasant lemon-lime taste, with an emphasis on the lime.

Fanta Pomaranczowa
It's a Polish soda review! Fanta Pomaranczowa has a wonderful flavor, which was more mild when compared to a typical American orange soda like Fanta Orange, Orange Slice, Orange Crush, or even Mountain Dew LiveWire.

7Up Plus: Cherry
"I think I probably like Island Fruit better than Cherry, but that's not saying much," according to our soft drink review. "Unfortunately, with Coke and Pepsi pretty much killing 7Up's market share, I doubt many people will be exposed to this drink."

7Up Plus: Island Fruit
Soda review discussing 7Up Plus: Island Fruit's pleasant orange color, typical of what you'd expect from orange drinks. The flavor wasn't too bad, of course, it still has the negative Splenda aftertaste.

Coke Black Cherry Vanilla
Coke seems creatively dead on so many fronts with this release. This beverage review talks about the failed branding strategy along with the slight hint of the vanilla, but no black cherry flavor.

Jones Soda Holiday Collection 2005

Jones Holiday Packs (2005 Overview)
Jones Soda releases two versions of the Holiday Pack for 2005. This includes both a national Holiday Pack and regional Holiday Pack. Be prepared for some gross flavors in this beverage review!

Jones Turkey & Gravy Soda (2005)
National Holiday Pack soda review: "I had to suppress my gag reflex big time in order to get my one and only gulp of Jones Turkey & Gravy Soda down! The smell of the drink was rancid."

Jones Pumpkin Pie Soda (2005)
National Holiday Pack beverage review: "Unlike the ugly brown Turkey & Gravy Soda experience, the color of the Pumpkin Pie Soda was what you might expect... orange. But it still tasted bad."

Jones Wild Herb Stuffing Soda (2005)
National Holiday Pack soft drink review: "Wild Herb Stuffing wasn't that bad. It's not something I'd actually want to drink again, but I didn't feel like vomiting all over the floor either."

Jones Smoked Salmon Paté Soda (2005)
Regional Holiday Pack soda review: "The smell of Smoked Salmon Paté Soda, 230mg of salt, and the goofy color all contributed to the disgusting experience."

Jones Turkey & Gravy Soda (2005)
Regional Holiday Pack beverage review: A second tasting of the same Turkey & Gravy flavor; Others try the drink at a party and actually think it's "not bad". Say what? You guys are freaks!

Jones Brussels Sprout Soda (2005)
National Holiday Pack soft drink review: "When you try to guzzle carbonated butter soda sweetened with Splenda and packed with 260mg of salt, something is not going to go right."

Jones Broccoli Casserole Soda (2005)
Regional Holiday Pack soda review: "It didn't taste like broccoli or a casserole at all! Instead, it tasted 'maple-y', like syrup. Go figure. I'm not sure I wanted to find out why."

Jones Corn On The Cob Soda (2005)
Regional Holiday Pack beverage review: "Instead of tasting like a nice pat of butter on top of a freshly picked stalk of corn, the resemblance was more to microwave caramel corn!"

Jones Pecan Pie Soda (2005)
Regional Holiday Pack soft drink: "If you ever find yourself having pancakes some morning and are looking for a little carbonation to start your day, Jones Pecan Pie Soda is the way to go!"

Jones Cranberry Soda (2005)
National Holiday Pack soda review: "The color was a non-offensive dark red. The scent was fresh and berry-like. Could it really be as bad as the others? It tasted like cough syrup."

Jones Holiday Packs (2005 Overview)
Jones Soda releases two versions of the Holiday Pack for 2005. This includes both a national Holiday Pack and regional Holiday Pack. Be prepared for some gross flavors in this beverage review!

Mountain Dew MDX
Same Mountain Dew Flavor. Higher caffeine content. Higher price. And it makes you use the bathroom quicker than regular Dew. Yup, those are the innovations in Mountain Dew MDX!

AMP
It's Mountain Dew plus maltodextrin, ginseng, taurine, B vitamins, guarana, and 8.875 mg of caffeine per ounce. Overall AMP is not too bad, if you like overpriced energy drinks.

Vault
Coke tries once again to battle Mountain Dew. The result is a caffeine-loaded drink that tastes and smells like McDonald's Orange Drink. But Vault is green. And has a nice logo.

Mountain Dew Pitch Black II
A sequel to 2004's original Mountain Dew Pitch Black, the new sour-infused Mountain Dew Pitch Black II tastes more like candy now. It's different. Different is good.

Branding of Diet Coke
Even though diet colas could actually surpass the regular colas soon in sales, the many variations the Coke has offered under the Diet Coke banner confuses the customer.

Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda
It's Diet Coke, minus the aspartame, plus the sucralose. Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda is a sweet-smelling cola with a bitter, fake taste. It may be the Diet Coke formula of the future.

Door County Cherry Cider Cooler
A memorable drink from Door County, WI, Door County Cherry Cider Cooler highlights a strong cherry taste, local ingredients, and bubbly finish. Highly recommended.

Coke Zero
It's a better "fake diet" drink than Coke C2, that's for sure. Still tastes artificially sweetened, but not too bad. Nice male-oriented packaging on Coke Zero as well!

Fanta Peach
They say Georgia is the Peach State because of the importance of peaches to the Georgia agricultural economy. I hate peaches, Georgia, and most likely Fanta Peach.

Pepsi One
Originally launched in 1998, Pepsi One has been given a new taste, new sweeteners, and a new packaging design. The result? It's still a diet drink. Bleh!

Cherry RC
Bringing back memories of my high school experience, I remember Cherry RC as being pretty good. However, tasting it today... yuck! The drink feels watered down overall.

Sierra Mist Free
"Diet" is out. "Free" is in. But nothing else really changes with Pepsi's renamed Sierra Mist Free. It's less of a rebranding that Diet Sprite Zero. Plus, the drink still tastes bad.

Sprite Remix Aruba Jam
The third version of the Sprite Remix line extension, Sprite Remix Aruba Jam is similar in flavor to Sprite Remix Tropical, but it's just not a standout drink. It's toned-down fruit punch.

Wild Cherry Pepsi
Reformulated for 2005, the new Wild Cherry Pepsi has a stronger cherry taste that is very good. It also has a less ugly bottle design, but still one that leaves a lot to be desired.

Mountain Dew LiveWire
Launched as the 3rd modern product line extension of the Mountain Dew brand, LiveWire is orange-flavored. Kinda like Orange Slice with a different aftertaste. However, it's not Mountain Dew.

Diet Coke with Lemon
Imagine spraying a can of Pledge down your throat... and then adding some diet sweeteners. Yeah, most people don't like Diet Coke with Lemon. So Coke redesigned the packaging!

Pepsi Twist
Lemons and Pepsi, how can you go wrong? The lemon taste could have been stronger, however Pepsi Twist satisfies on its own or with food. It's tasty, but not commercially successful.

Vanilla Coke
This drink still has the same taste it did when first introduced in 2002. However, the new packaging for Vanilla Coke might bring up memories of scary 1980's science fiction!

Coca-Cola with Lime
You are better off buying yourself a bottle of Lime Juice, because there sure isn't much lime flavoring in this lame drink! Coca-Cola with Lime is not recommended.

Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper
"It smells pretty much like the original Dr. Pepper. And that first sip? Not bad," we write in this beverage review. "It's predominantly the traditional Dr. Pepper flavor, however the aftertaste is noticeably different."

Mello Yello Afterglow
From the soda review: "One would expect Mello Yello Afterglow to have an orange flavor. Rather, it had somewhat of a tangerine vibe, or maybe it was peach... I couldn't really place it. But beyond that, it just didn't taste very good."

Fanta Citrus
Formerly known as Citra. From the soft drink review: "Not only tastes good by itself, but with a meal as well. The flavor is very complimenting without overpowering the other tastes you may encounter."

Pepsi Holiday Spice
A limited-edition beverage for Christmas 2005. "I'm not exactly sure what 'holiday spices' were used in flavoring this product, but the resulting palatability is actually very good!"

Orange Crush
"Crush is somewhat hard to find these days, but it's still around," we note in this beverage review. "But once I opened the cap and drank of this beverage, I knew who was still the leader of the pack."
